The fundamental concept on which the theory of international trade is based is the principle of comparative advantage. This principle may be defined by the statement that trade will be mutually advantageous whenever the relative prices of various commodities differ from country to country before trade by an amount great enough to over-offset the costs of transferring the commodities in question from one country to another.
